Gynecomastia means overdeveloped (or enlarged breasts) “man boobs” in men. Male breast enlargement is due to a combination of fatty tissue and glandular breast tissue. This is a very common problem and can occur in men of any age. Men seek treatment because they avoid certain physical activities that would expose the breasts and often do all they can to hide this condition. Gynecomastia can cause emotional discomfort and can impair self confidence. Weight loss is not often effective in reducing the male breast and weight training may increase the surrounding muscle mass, thereby increasing the projection of the breasts.
Gynecomastia can be the result of hormonal imbalance, genetic conditions, disease, the use of certain medications. However, the majority of cases are idiopathic (no specific reason can be identified).
A detailed patient evaluation should be completed before surgical treatment. The incidence of male breast cancer is about 0.5 %.
Gynecomastia can be the result of excess localized fat, the development of excess glandular tissue or a combination of both.
The treatment options are largely dependent on the nature of the breast tissue(s):
Liposuction is done if the breast enlargement is primarily due to adipose tissue (fatty tissue).
By contrast, the dense, fibrous glandular tissue may respond to the Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction.
However, when the ultra sound can not liquify the dense tissue, then a subcutaneous (under the skin) Mastectomy is frequently required.
At ALABAMA PLASTIC SURGERY, Dr. Gene Moor treats each case with a combination of ultrasound liposuction with the additional procedure of a small sub areolear incision, a small incision on the bottom half of the nipple area, to help remove any remaining and unwanted fatty and fibrous breast tissues that do not respond to ultrasound. “In the past when there were times that I have treated with liposuction and ultrasound alone, I have not been as satisfied as when I added the small sub areolar incision”.
Surgery is performed under general anesthesia at Grandview Medical Center on an outpatient basis. After surgery, a small drainage tube may be inserted under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid that may accumulate. A support garment is usually applied to minimize swelling and to support your chest tissues.

Most of these patients are fairly recent post operatively, and the results will continue to improve as the swelling subsides and the skin shrinks.
