Plastic Surgery for Men | Mountain Brook | Birmingham | Vestavia Hills
Every year more men are having plastic surgery. These procedures range from Botox injections to a Body Lift.
These procedures may address concerns that have been an annoying issue since early childhood, such as a big nose or protruding ears. Age related changes in the body become an issue later. Fat accumulation in the abdomen, waist, the chest and neck, droopy and baggy eyelids, excessive grooves in the face and the “turkey neck” are some of the changes that can be addressed by plastic surgery.
Dr. Gene Moor at ALABAMA PLASTIC SURGERY offers a wide range of options for men. In a relaxed and informal setting, Dr. Moor listens to your concerns and helps you choose the appropriate procedure for you. For more details on an individual procedure, please visit the section on individual procedures.
As men age, fat accumulates in the abdomen, around the waist (flanks), or on the chest as well as in the neck. These areas are resistant to diet and exercise. Men begin to wear different clothes trying to conceal these unwanted fat pockets. These areas can be effectively treated with liposuction. Men do not have as much bruising and recovery is not as long as you might expect.
Enlarged male breasts, Gynecomastia, is a very common condition affecting a large percentage of patients. It is a result of the accumulation of excess fatty tissue, excess glandular tissue or a combination of both. Heredity, weight gain, medications or a combination thereof can be the cause. Gynecomastia can be surgically treated resulting in a more masculine upper body. This is an outpatient procedure.
A face lift addresses the tell-tale laxity of the skin of the facial grooves, jaw line and neck. The redundant neck tissue is usually best addressed with a face lift. Some men prefer to have a direct surgical excision of the neck skin as opposed to “the more involved face lift”.
Men retain their skin elasticity longer than women. Large areas of loose hanging skin and excess fat are usually the result of massive weight loss from diet and exercise and/or from bariatric surgery. The loose skin can be removed surgically by a circumferential body lift or tummy tuck. The recovery period is longer than other plastic surgery operations mentioned.
The protruding ears usually cannot be hidden with the male haircut. Dr. Gene Moor of ALABAMA PLASTIC SURGERY has performed otoplasties on patients as early as 5 years of age to as late as 75 years old. The protruding ears are surgically positioned closer to the head.
Men frequently pursue nose surgery to improve their appearance by making their nose smaller, to seek improvement in their nasal profile or to reduce the bulbous or drooping tip. Impaired breathing due to a structural defect in the nose may also be a reason to seek out Dr. Gene Moor.
This is the second most popular surgical procedure I do on men. The droopy upper eyelids make you look older and more tired than you are and may interfere with vision. The surgery can be done under local anesthesia and the recovery time is minimal. A younger, more rested look is the result.
Correction of the droopy brow would further improve the overall eye appearance
Non-Surgical Skin Treatments:
Botox® (Botulinum Toxin A) is derived from clostridium botulinum. It has been used for many decades for pain and contractures in burn victims and later for eye muscle spasms. It is now FDA approved for the treatment of grooves, frown lines and wrinkles. Dr. M. Eugene Moor was one of the first physicians in Birmingham to use Botox for the treatment of migraine headaches about 15 years ago. It is the most popular cosmetic procedure done in the world today and it is best to have a plastic surgeon inject it in order to achieve excellent results. Botox relaxes the specific muscle injected and is commonly used in the forehead, brow, around the eye and the mouth. The effect of Botox lasts 3-4 months and can last 6 months or longer with repeated injections.
Dysport® and Xeomin® are similar products that also produce a relaxing effect on the frown muscle injected.
Juvederm® is a hyaluronic acid dermal filler for deep wrinkles. Dr. Moor also uses it to restore volume in the lips and nasal labial folds. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body and therefore unlike collagen, does not require allergy testing. The results are immediate and may last up to 9 months or more.
Juvederm Voluma® is an FDA-approved filler to correct age-related volume loss in the mid-face. It creates a smoother contour and a fuller and more youthful appearance. It lasts up to 2 years.
Restylane® is a dermal, injectable filler of hyaluronic acid that Dr. Gene Moor uses to smooth out frown lines, grooves and wrinkles and also to add volume to the lips. Restylane® is biodegradable and therefore lasts up to 6 months.
Radiesse® is a synthetic calcium hydroxylapatite injectable implant. It is a mineral-like compound found naturally in the human bone. Radiesse® provides an immediate lift, replenishes lost volume and continues to work by stimulating the body to produce its own collagen. Radiesse® is considered a subdermal and volumizing filler for correction of moderate to severe facial grooves and wrinkles, such as the nasolabial folds. The results last up to 2 years.
Dr. Moor uses different concentrations of Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peels to improve and smooth the texture of the facial skin by lifting off the outer layer of skin. After treatment, the skin will have a pinkish tinge and some light crusting for 2-3 days. This is easily treated with moisturizer. Your skin will look softer and younger.
With laser resurfacing Dr. Moor removes the fine lines and tightens the skin. The most dramatic results are achieved when applied to aged and sun-damaged skin when a medium depth chemical peel [link: chemical peel] will not reach adequate depth of treatment and does not produce the desired optimal improvement. This more involved procedure produces excellent results.
